Journeys with John Paperback – November 22, 2025

For the last several years of my employment at Lifetime Fitness in Commerce, Michigan, my husband begged me to retire. I had a problem with this, as I was one of those lucky 15 percenters that was passionate about their career. I had been in the fitness industry most of my life. I had clients, colleagues, a management team, a healthy atmosphere and a lifestyle I was absolutely in love with. I literally jumped out of bed at 5 AM (sometimes earlier) every morning, looking forward to train my clients, who to this day many remain dear friends. On the other hand, my husband John had already been retired from technology sales for several years. So this was a frequent topic of discussion and even arguments at times. His dream was to purchase an RV and travel to every National and Provincial Park in this small house on wheels. “What?!” “What the what?!” you say? Ya, that’s what all my friends said. That’s what all my clients and colleagues said. That’s what I said!!!! But this man wore me down! Add to that, we are at the age where friends and family are passing. There is a saying, “no one ever said on their deathbed, ‘I wish I spent more time at the office." So, after much reflection, I agreed to take a 6 month leave of absence from a job I loved, purchase a 37 ft. fifth wheel and hit the road traveling with my husband. I never looked back.
